Before you eat, answer this one question

The Second Rule to Weigh Less

"And if you follow it, you'll age less"

1 THING YOU SHOULD KNOW

The clock doesn't know whether you're hungry.

It's noon—so you eat lunch.

Everyone else is having dinner—so you eat dinner.

Someone brings doughnuts into the office—apparently it's doughnut time.

But none of those things answer the question your body actually cares about:

Am I hungry?

We've become very good at eating for reasons that have almost nothing to do with physical hunger.

  • Habit.
  • Boredom.
  • Stress.
  • Celebration.
  • Convenience.
  • Because it's there.

And sometimes simply because it's time to eat.

1 THING YOU SHOULD DO

Before you eat anything this week, stop for five seconds and ask:

“Am I physically hungry?”

Not: Could I eat?

Not: Would that taste good?

Not: Is it lunchtime?

ASK: "Am I hungry?"

If the answer is yes, eat.

If the answer is no, wait until it becomes yes.

That's it.

WHY YOU SHOULD DO IT

Your body already has a sophisticated system for telling you when it needs energy.

Hunger and fullness are influenced by signals between your brain, digestive system, fat tissue, pancreas, and hormones.

But modern life gives us opportunities to override those signals all day long.

Food is everywhere.

So instead of beginning another diet with another set of rules, I want you to practice something much more fundamental: Listen to your body before you feed it.

For many people trying to WEIGH LESS, learning the difference between wanting food and needing food can be surprisingly powerful.

And there's another benefit.

You're not counting calories.

You're building awareness.

That's a skill you can take with you for the rest of your life.

YOUR 7-DAY CHALLENGE

For seven days, before anything containing calories goes into your mouth, ask:

“Am I physically hungry?”

If you're not sure, wait 20 minutes.

Then ask again.

Don't see how long you can go without eating. That's not the experiment.

We're simply trying to reconnect eating with hunger.

ONE QUESTION

When do you eat most often when you're NOT actually hungry?

After dinner?

While cooking?

Watching television?

At work?

Hit reply and tell me.

You might learn something about yourself just by answering.

IS IT MY HORMONES OR SOMETHING ELSE?

THIS WEEK'S USIE

Doc & Vicky Mac

Vicky and I still have so much of the world to see. That makes our commitment to Live Younger, Longer stronger with every trip.

P.S. Next Thursday we move from WEIGHT to HEALTH, with another small experiment you can try for seven days.

This newsletter is for general educational purposes and isn't a substitute for individualized medical care.

Hi! I'm Doc Mac.

I have practiced hormone and weight optimization for over forty-five years. I retired 10 years ago; at least, that is what I thought. When I retired, my wife and I owned and operated several medical clinics specializing in hormone and weight optimization. We discovered that as a woman enters menopause, her hormones become disrupted, causing many women to gain weight rapidly, and no matter what they do, not be able to lose it. If that has happened to you, text me at 209-345-9799. I have found that those who text me are serious about creating the body they desire. Once I receive your text, I will find a convenient time for you to speak with me. During our conversation, I will customize a gourmet weight loss menu for you, and tweak it until it works. Our menus have no caloric restrictions or frequency of meals. There is no charge! 👍 Doc

MY KNEES HAD AN OPINION ABOUT MY WEIGHT There was a time when I weighed 244 pounds. And my knees reminded me whenever. I stood after sitting.I walked up stairs.I tried to pull weeds. Now, in my seventh decade, I weigh the same as I did in high school. I can work in my yard.Vicky and I can travel with ease. And I can strength train several times a week. And I've become much more interested in what my body will allow me to do in my 80s than what it looks like in my 70s. Oh, and by the way, I am...

INSULIN 1 THING YOU SHOULD KNOW When you eat carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into glucose. Glucose enters your bloodstream. Your pancreas responds by releasing insulin. Insulin opens the doors to your cells, allowing glucose to enter your cells and exit your bloodstream. That's a good thing. High blood glucose is toxic to your body. One of the most dangerous health conditions I see today is insulin resistance. That's when your body doesn't respond to insulin as...

THE MIDLIFE REALIZATION She stood sideways in front of the bathroom mirror and lifted her shirt's hem. Then she let it fall. She turned forward again. Sideways. Forward. She wasn't exactly sure what she was looking for. Maybe evidence that yesterday's reflection had been wrong. Her face was still hers. Her eyes were hers. But somewhere between her shoulders and thighs, her body had begun telling a different story. She put both hands around her waist, pulling slightly at the skin as though she...
