"Doc, is regular everyday laundry detergent bad for me?"

Yes, especially when you are in menopause!

Regular laundry detergent can disrupt hormones and cause you to gain weight. They are filled with hormone-disrupting chemicals.

Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals in Regular Detergents

  1. Phthalates (Fragrances)
    • Found in artificial fragrances, phthalates can mimic or block hormones like estrogen and testosterone.
    • Linked to reproductive issues, thyroid dysfunction, and even weight gain.
  2. Parabens (Preservatives)
    • Act as xenoestrogens, meaning they mimic estrogen in the body.
    • Can contribute to hormone imbalances, especially in menopausal women.
  3. Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEs)
    • Common in detergents, NPEs can interfere with estrogen levels and disrupt hormones.
    • Banned in some countries but still found in many U.S. products.
  4. Optical Brighteners
    • These chemicals make clothes look whiter but can be toxic to cells and act as hormone disruptors.
  5. Chlorine & Bleach Byproducts
    • Found in many detergents, these compounds can disrupt thyroid function by interfering with iodine absorption.

🚫 Who’s Most at Risk?

  • Menopausal women (who are already dealing with hormonal fluctuations).
  • Pregnant women (exposure can affect fetal development).
  • Children & infants (developing endocrine systems are more sensitive).

How to Avoid Hormone-Disrupting Detergents

  • Choose fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free formulas.
  • Look for plant-based detergents without synthetic additives.
  • Use natural alternatives like baking soda, vinegar, or soap nuts.
  • Check labels for phthalates, parabens, NPEs, and optical brighteners.
