HERE'S ANOTHER MAC TOOLWEIGH LESS · AGE LESSIn January 2018, I bought a bathroom scale for less than lunch. Nearly nine years later, I still step on that same scale every morning. It doesn't measure 27 different things. It doesn't connect to my phone. And it doesn't pretend to tell me my biological age. It tells me what I weigh. And after 46 years of helping people optimize their weight, I've learned that what matters most isn't how much information a scale gives you. It's what you do with that information. The scale I've used since 2018It's an Etekcity Digital Body Weight Scale. Nothing fancy. Just a tempered-glass platform, four sensors, and a large, blue backlit display. It currently sells on Amazon for about $17. And mine has been working for nearly nine years. Not bad for something I step on every morning! [SEE THE ETEKCITY SCALE ON AMAZON] Side note: I am not an Amazon affiliate. I receive no commission or compensation if you purchase this scale. I recommend it because I've personally used it for nearly nine years. Why I don't recommend expensive bathroom scalesSome modern scales promise to measure body fat, muscle mass, visceral fat, metabolic age, and a dozen other things. But many of those measurements are estimates that can fluctuate with hydration and other factors. You don't need all that information to begin managing your weight. You need a reliable measurement, a consistent routine, and someone who can interpret the patterns. That's the system Vicky and I developed years ago in our weight-loss clinics. And it changed the way we coached our patients. Your scale doesn't know whether you gained fatIn yesterday's Substack article, if you haven't read it, click the Substack link to see why I encourage my clients to weigh daily. In the article, I told you about Susan. She stepped on her scale and discovered she'd gained almost a pound overnight. She was furious. She'd followed her menu perfectly! But here's what I explained to her: Your scale measures weight. It doesn't explain weight. That extra pound could reflect water retention, glycogen storage, or even what's in your digestive tract. It doesn't necessarily mean you gained body fat. And that's why I don't want my clients making decisions based on one morning's number. I want to see the trend. The most important part isn't the scaleEvery morning, my clients send me two numbers. 1. Their weight — WEIGH LESS. 2. Their hours slept — AGE LESS. Those two numbers help us monitor progress, recognize patterns, and identify questions worth investigating. And there's something even more powerful happening. They're practicing daily accountability. Vicky suggested we have our patients text their numbers every day instead of waiting until their next weekly office appointment nearly 15 years ago. That simple idea became a foundation of our coaching system. Today, I still use it. And I still step on my little Etekcity scale every morning. This week's Mac recommendationIf you already own a reliable bathroom scale, keep it. You don't need to buy anything. But if you're shopping for one, I can confidently tell you which one has served me well for nearly nine years. [TAKE A LOOK AT MY $17 ETEKCITY SCALE] Remember, the most important weight-loss tool isn't necessarily the one with the most features. I have practiced hormone and weight optimization for over forty-five years. I retired 10 years ago; at least, that is what I thought. When I retired, my wife and I owned and operated several medical clinics specializing in hormone and weight optimization. We discovered that as a woman enters menopause, her hormones become disrupted, causing many women to gain weight rapidly, and no matter what they do, not be able to lose it. If that has happened to you, text me at 209-345-9799. I have found that those who text me are serious about creating the body they desire. Once I receive your text, I will find a convenient time for you to speak with me. During our conversation, I will customize a gourmet weight loss menu for you, and tweak it until it works. Our menus have no caloric restrictions or frequency of meals. There is no charge! 👍 Doc
The Second Rule to Weigh Less "And if you follow it, you'll age less" 1 THING YOU SHOULD KNOW The clock doesn't know whether you're hungry. It's noon—so you eat lunch. Everyone else is having dinner—so you eat dinner. Someone brings doughnuts into the office—apparently it's doughnut time. But none of those things answer the question your body actually cares about: Am I hungry? We've become very good at eating for reasons that have almost nothing to do with physical hunger. Habit. Boredom....
MY KNEES HAD AN OPINION ABOUT MY WEIGHT There was a time when I weighed 244 pounds. And my knees reminded me whenever. I stood after sitting.I walked up stairs.I tried to pull weeds. Now, in my seventh decade, I weigh the same as I did in high school. I can work in my yard.Vicky and I can travel with ease. And I can strength train several times a week. And I've become much more interested in what my body will allow me to do in my 80s than what it looks like in my 70s. Oh, and by the way, I am...
INSULIN 1 THING YOU SHOULD KNOW When you eat carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into glucose. Glucose enters your bloodstream. Your pancreas responds by releasing insulin. Insulin opens the doors to your cells, allowing glucose to enter your cells and exit your bloodstream. That's a good thing. High blood glucose is toxic to your body. One of the most dangerous health conditions I see today is insulin resistance. That's when your body doesn't respond to insulin as...
